Old Carmel Charmer

"Everyone loves something that tastes good," says Jeanne Johnston, owner of the shiny new Petals and Pastries at Mission between Fourth and Fifth (620-1400). "I'd like to think we are what old Carmel used to be."

Weekly photog and former barrista Nic Coury went and scouted out the place yesterday at its digs in the former Le Coq d' Or. Here are some other nuggets he unearthed and I pulled from the menu.

• Her daughter, Jennifer Hatton, is the pastry chef and used to be the baker at Bonjourno in Carmel.

• It's open 7am-6pm weekdays, until 8pm Saturday and 1pm Sunday, doing breakfast, lunch and dinner.

• Most everything is made completely from scratch.

• There are two soup specials daily.

• The majority of fruits and vegetables are purchased at the Barnyard farmers market (Tuesdays).

• Table flower displays available for sale.

• My favorite note—Sweet and Savory Friday Happy Hour is 4-6pm with complimentary pastries, quiches and such.

• A mostly local wine list that includes Bernardnus and Georis, Rombauer and Nino Franco Proseco Brut. And some rarer finds like a 1985 Lynch Bages for a few Benjamins.

• Some cut-and-pasted highlights from the "cafe and patio" menu...
